V-PNA  |  1× in 1 sense
to silence, stop the mouth, muzzle
This verb literally means to put something over the mouth—to bridle, muzzle, or silence. In Titus 1:11, Paul says false teachers must be silenced, their mouths stopped. The classical usage included bridling horses and curbing enemies, but also the technical sense of a flute player putting on the mouthpiece. The metaphorical sense of silencing a speaker was well-established. The multilingual evidence strongly emphasizes the silencing function: Spanish 'tapar-la-boca' (shut the mouth), French and German similarly direct. This is forceful language about stopping destructive speech.

Senses
1. sense 1 Paul's instruction in Titus 1:11 to silence false teachers uses vivid imagery from animal husbandry—these teachers need to be muzzled like dangerous animals or bridled like unruly horses. The cross-linguistic consistency (all languages emphasize mouth-stopping or silencing) reflects the force of Paul's directive. The classical background of bridling and curbing emphasizes control of something powerful and potentially harmful—speech that overturns whole households needs to be forcefully restrained.
