V-AIA-3S  |  1× in 1 sense
to consent, nod approval, agree to something
This verb originally described the physical gesture of nodding one's head to signal agreement or approval, often used in Homer for Zeus nodding assent. By New Testament times it carried the broader sense of consenting or agreeing to a request. When the Ephesian Jews ask Paul to stay longer in Acts 18:20, the question is whether he nodded approval to their request. The multilingual glosses (Spanish consintió, French consentir) preserve the core idea of granting permission or agreement.

Senses
1. sense 1 In Acts 18:20, the verb describes a potential response to the Ephesians' request for Paul to remain with them. The evidence across languages centers on the concept of consenting or agreeing, whether through gesture or verbal assent. Classical usage emphasized the physical nod as a sign of authoritative approval, which evolved into the more general sense of agreement preserved in the Romance language glosses.
