V-AIM-3P  |  8× in 1 sense
To forget or lose from memory; to neglect or disregard through failure to remember.
A deponent middle verb (ἐπιλανθάνομαι) built from ἐπί + λανθάνω, intensifying the basic notion of forgetting. In the Gospels it describes the disciples' embarrassing failure to bring bread (Matt 16:5; Mark 8:14), while Paul transforms it into a deliberate spiritual discipline — 'forgetting what lies behind' in his race toward the prize (Phil 3:13). God's own memory stands in pointed contrast: he will never forget works done in love (Heb 6:10). Spanish olvidar and French oublier both capture the involuntary quality, while the English 'forget' carries the same double edge of accidental lapse and willful neglect.

Senses
1. forget, neglect To lose something from memory or to fail to keep it in mind, whether through inadvertence or deliberate choice. The disciples forgot (ἐπελάθοντο) to bring bread on a boat trip (Matt 16:5; Mark 8:14), an everyday lapse, yet God does not forget (ἐπιλαθέσθαι) acts of love (Heb 6:10). Paul's usage in Phil 3:13 — 'forgetting what lies behind' — shows the verb can denote a purposeful setting aside of memory. The sparrows of Luke 12:6, not one forgotten before God, reveal the theological weight the word carries when its subject is divine.
