V-FIA-1S  |  5× in 1 sense
To write upon, inscribe; to engrave or record text on a surface, whether literal or figurative.
The verbal counterpart of epigraphē ('inscription'), meaning to write or engrave upon a surface. Its NT uses span the literal and the deeply theological: the charge inscribed on Jesus' cross (Mark 15:26), the altar inscription 'To an Unknown God' that Paul noticed in Athens (Acts 17:23), and -- most profoundly -- God's promise to inscribe his laws on the hearts and minds of his people (Heb 8:10; 10:16), echoing Jeremiah's new-covenant prophecy. Revelation 21:12 describes the names of Israel's tribes inscribed on the gates of the new Jerusalem. Spanish inscribiré and French inscrit together capture the act of permanent engraving.

Senses
1. sense 1 To write upon or inscribe text on a physical or metaphorical surface. Literally, the charge was inscribed over Jesus on the cross (Mark 15:26) and an Athenian altar bore the inscription 'To an Unknown God' (Acts 17:23); the names of the twelve tribes were inscribed on the gates of the heavenly Jerusalem (Rev 21:12). Figuratively and theologically, God promises to inscribe his laws on the hearts and minds of his people under the new covenant (Heb 8:10; 10:16), transforming 'inscription' from external engraving to internal transformation. Spanish inscribiré ('I will inscribe') and French inscrit ('inscribed') capture both the completed and promissory aspects.
