V-PIA-3S  |  4× in 1 sense
to exercise authority or power over; to have the right to control; to be mastered by
Derived from exousia ('authority, right, power'), this verb denotes the active exercise of authority over persons or things. In Luke 22:25 Jesus contrasts the way Gentile kings 'lord it over' their subjects with servant leadership. Paul employs it memorably in 1 Corinthians 6:12, declaring 'I will not be mastered by anything,' using the passive voice to refuse subjugation. In 1 Corinthians 7:4 the mutual authority of spouses over one another's body reflects a strikingly reciprocal application.

Senses
1. sense 1 To wield authority or dominion over others, often with connotations of control or mastery. Luke 22:25 describes rulers who 'exercise authority' (Spanish 'ejerciendo-autoridad,' French 'exercer-l'autorité'), while Paul in 1 Corinthians 6:12 inverts the verb into the passive ('I will not be mastered/seré-dominado') to assert freedom from domination. The spousal usage in 1 Corinthians 7:4, where each partner 'has authority' over the other's body, extends the semantic range into mutual, consensual governance rather than unilateral control.
