ἐξηγ-έομαι G1834
To relate in detail, explain, narrate, make known; to give a full account of events or truths.
In classical Greek this word ranged broadly from 'lead' to 'prescribe' to 'narrate,' but in the NT it has narrowed to the communicative sense of explaining, relating, or making known in detail. Its most theologically charged occurrence is John 1:18 -- the only-begotten Son 'has made known' the unseen Father, using the very verb from which English derives 'exegesis.' In Acts, it describes missionaries giving detailed accounts: the Emmaus disciples explain what happened on the road (Luke 24:35), Cornelius recounts his vision (Acts 10:8), and Paul and Barnabas narrate the signs God performed among the Gentiles (Acts 15:12, 14).
Senses
1. relate, explain, make known — To relate, narrate, explain, or make known in detail -- to give a thorough account of events, experiences, or truths. This is the word from which English derives 'exegesis.' Its theological high point is John 1:18, where the Son is said to have 'made known' (exegesato) the invisible God -- an act of divine narration that reveals the Father's character. In Luke 24:35, the Emmaus disciples 'explain' (exegounto) the road encounter; in Acts 10:8, Cornelius 'relates' his vision; and in Acts 15:12 and 15:14, Paul, Barnabas, and James 'narrate' what God has done among the Gentiles. Spanish 'explicar/relatar' and French 'exposer/raconter' divide the semantic territory that this single Greek verb covers. 6×
