ἐξᾰγορ-άξω G1805
to redeem, buy back; in the middle voice, to make the most of (time or opportunity)
A compound of ek ('out of') and agorazo ('to buy in the marketplace'), this verb carries the vivid image of purchasing someone out of slavery or bondage. Paul uses it powerfully in Galatians 3:13 and 4:5 to describe Christ redeeming believers from the curse of the Law. In Ephesians 5:16 and Colossians 4:5, the middle voice form 'redeeming the time' shifts the metaphor toward seizing every opportunity wisely, as one would snap up a bargain before it disappears.
Senses
1. sense 1 — To buy back or ransom from bondage, especially from the curse of the Law. Paul's usage in Galatians 3:13 ('Christ redeemed us') and 4:5 ('to redeem those under the Law') draws on the marketplace image of purchasing a slave's freedom. Spanish 'redimió/redima' and English 'redeemed' consistently reflect this liberating transaction. The aorist and subjunctive forms emphasize the decisive, completed act of Christ's redemptive purchase. 4×
