To intercede, appeal to, plead with; to approach someone in authority on behalf of another, either positively or negatively.
Originally meaning to encounter or meet with someone, this verb developed the specialized sense of making a formal appeal or intercession. In the New Testament it covers both positive intercession -- the Spirit interceding for the saints (Rom 8:27), Christ interceding at God's right hand (Rom 8:34, Heb 7:25) -- and negative petition, as when the Jewish leaders appealed to Festus against Paul (Acts 25:24) or when Elijah pleaded with God against Israel (Rom 11:2). The Spanish interceder and French intercéder reflect the dominant NT sense precisely.
