ἔνδειξις G1732
demonstration, proof, evidence; a visible display that establishes something as true
This noun denotes a concrete showing-forth that makes something evident or provable. Paul uses it twice in Romans 3:25-26 to describe Christ's sacrificial death as God's 'demonstration' of his righteousness—not merely a claim but a public exhibit of justice. In 2 Corinthians 8:24, the Corinthians are urged to show proof of their love before the churches. Philippians 1:28 speaks of the opponents' resistance as evidence of their destruction. Each use demands that the proof be visible to others.
Senses
1. sense 1 — A public demonstration or visible proof that establishes a truth-claim before witnesses. All four NT uses emphasize externally verifiable evidence. In Rom 3:25-26, God sets forth Christ as a demonstration (ἔνδειξιν) of divine righteousness—twice repeated for emphasis. In 2 Cor 8:24, the Corinthians must display proof (ἔνδειξιν) of their love. Phil 1:28 treats the opponents' boldness as evidence (ἔνδειξις) of coming judgment. French 'démonstration' and German 'Beweis' both capture the forensic, evidentiary quality. 4×
