ἐμβρῑμ-άομαι G1690
To be deeply moved, groan inwardly, or sternly warn; expressing intense emotion—indignation, grief, or urgency.
A remarkably intense verb originally describing the snorting of horses, applied in the NT to Jesus' powerful emotional responses. At Lazarus' tomb, Jesus is 'deeply moved in spirit' and 'groans within himself' (John 11:33, 38)—an expression of grief and perhaps anger at death itself. Earlier, Jesus 'sternly warns' the healed blind men and a leper to keep silent about their miracles (Matt 9:30; Mark 1:43). In Mark 14:5, bystanders 'scold' the woman who poured perfume on Jesus. Spanish 'conmoviéndose profundamente' captures the depth of feeling, while French 'frémir' evokes a visceral trembling.
Senses
1. sense 1 — To be deeply moved with strong emotion—whether grief, indignation, or stern urgency—sometimes expressed as groaning or sharp warning. The word carries visceral force: it originally described a horse snorting. Jesus 'groans in spirit' at Lazarus' tomb (John 11:33, 38), moved by grief and perhaps outrage at death. In Matt 9:30 and Mark 1:43 he 'sternly charges' healed persons to silence—an urgent, almost fierce command. Mark 14:5 uses it for the indignant scolding directed at the woman with the alabaster jar. Spanish 'conmoviéndose profundamente' and French 'frémir' both convey that this is emotion felt at the deepest bodily level. 5×
