Freedom, liberty — the state of being free, especially from the bondage of sin, law, or corruption
The noun ἐλευθερία (eleutheria) denotes freedom, used primarily for theological liberation from sin, the Mosaic law, and cosmic corruption. Creation awaits 'the freedom of the glory of the children of God' (Rom 8:21). 'Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom' (2 Cor 3:17). Paul's Galatian letter pivots on this concept: spies infiltrated to undermine 'our freedom in Christ' (Gal 2:4), and 'for freedom Christ has set us free' (Gal 5:1). Yet freedom must not become 'an opportunity for the flesh' (Gal 5:13; 1 Pet 2:16). James calls the Torah 'the law of freedom' (Jas 1:25; 2:12). Spanish 'libertad' and German 'Freiheit' preserve the emancipatory register.
