ἐκτῐν-άσσω G1621
to shake off or shake out, as dust from feet or garments, signaling rejection or disassociation
A vivid gestural verb describing the forceful shaking off of dust or debris. In the Gospels, Jesus instructs his disciples to shake the dust from their feet when leaving an unreceptive town—a prophetic sign of judgment (Matt 10:14; Mark 6:11). Paul and Barnabas perform this same gesture against hostile opponents in Pisidian Antioch (Acts 13:51). In Acts 18:6, Paul shakes out his garments against the Corinthian synagogue, echoing Nehemiah 5:13. Every NT use carries symbolic force beyond the physical act.
Senses
1. sense 1 — To shake off or shake out as a symbolic act of protest, renunciation, or transferred responsibility. All four NT occurrences function as prophetic gestures rather than mere hygiene. Spanish 'sacudir' and French 'secouer' convey the vigorous physical motion. Matt 10:14 and Mark 6:11 describe dust shaken from feet as testimony against rejecting towns; Acts 13:51 repeats the gesture against persecutors; Acts 18:6 intensifies to shaking out garments, recalling Nehemiah's oath-gesture. 4×
