V-PNM/P  |  13× in 1 sense
be amazed, be astonished, be astounded — to be struck with overwhelming surprise or wonder
Ekplesso literally means 'to strike out of' one's senses, combining ek ('out') and plesso ('to strike'). In all 13 New Testament occurrences it appears in the passive or middle voice, describing the overwhelming astonishment of crowds or individuals in response to Jesus. The reaction is provoked by his teaching (Matt 7:28, 13:54, 22:33; Mark 1:22, 6:2, 11:18; Luke 4:32), his authority over demons (Mark 7:37), and his actions more broadly (Luke 9:43). This is not mild surprise but a visceral, disorienting amazement — Spanish 'asombrarse,' French 'etre frappe d'etonnement,' and German 'staunen' all convey a being knocked off balance by the unexpected.

Senses
1. be amazed, be astonished, be astounded To be struck with overwhelming amazement or astonishment, always passive/middle in the NT, describing the profound emotional impact of Jesus' words and deeds on those who witnessed them. Occurs in response to his teaching at the Sermon on the Mount (Matt 7:28), in the Nazareth synagogue (Matt 13:54, Mark 6:2), and in the Temple (Matt 22:33, Mark 11:18), as well as his miraculous works (Mark 7:37, Luke 9:43). The compound ek- intensifies the root plesso ('strike'), conveying a sense of being knocked out of one's ordinary frame of reference. Consistently rendered with strong astonishment vocabulary across languages. 13×
