An intensified form of πειράζω (the ἐκ- prefix adding force), this verb describes the act of putting someone—especially God—to the test. In the Synoptic temptation narratives (Matt 4:7; Luke 4:12), Jesus quotes Deuteronomy 6:16 against Satan: 'You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.' Paul warns the Corinthians against repeating Israel's wilderness provocations (1 Cor 10:9). The lawyer in Luke 10:25 tests Jesus with a question, though the word carries a lighter nuance there.
