Poner a prueba de modo extremo; tentar a Dios exigiendo señales o pruebas de su poder
Forma intensificada de πειράζω (el prefijo ἐκ- añade fuerza), este verbo describe el acto de poner a alguien a prueba de manera presuntuosa, especialmente a Dios. En los relatos sinópticos de la tentación (Mt 4:7; Lc 4:12), Jesús cita Deuteronomio 6:16 contra Satanás: 'No tentarás al Señor tu Dios'. Pablo advierte a los corintios contra repetir las provocaciones de Israel en el desierto (1 Co 10:9). El intérprete de la ley en Lucas 10:25 pone a prueba a Jesús con una pregunta, aunque allí el matiz es más leve.

Las cuatro ocurrencias neotestamentarias giran en torno a este sentido.
