1. wait for, await, expect — To wait for someone or something with expectation and patience; to await an anticipated outcome. All NT occurrences share this single core meaning with no semantic differentiation -- the apparent splits are purely inflectional (present participle, imperfect indicative, present imperative, present indicative). In John 5:3, the sick 'were waiting for' (ekdechomenon) the moving of the water at Bethesda. In Acts 17:16, Paul 'was waiting for' (ekdechomenou) Silas and Timothy in Athens. Christ, after his sacrifice, 'is waiting' (ekdechomenos) until his enemies are made a footstool (Heb 10:13). Abraham 'was waiting for' (exedecheto) the city whose architect is God (Heb 11:10). The farmer 'awaits' (ekdechetai) the precious fruit of the earth (James 5:7). Paul 'awaits' (ekdechomai) Timothy (1 Cor 16:11), and instructs the Corinthians to 'wait for one another' (ekdechesthe) at the Lord's Supper (1 Cor 11:33).
