δυσ-νόητος G1425
Hard to understand, difficult to grasp intellectually; not easily comprehended
This adjective describes something intellectually difficult to grasp or understand. In 2 Peter 3:16, Peter acknowledges that some things in Paul's letters are 'hard to understand,' which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction. Classical Greek used it for things difficult to comprehend. Peter's candid admission validates the intellectual challenge of some biblical teaching while warning against using difficulty as license for distortion. Difficulty requires diligent study, not revision to match our preferences.
Senses
1. sense 1 — 2 Peter 3:16 admits that some of Paul's writings contain things 'hard to understand,' which unstable people distort. The adjective emphasizes intellectual difficulty in grasping meaning. Spanish 'difíciles de entender,' French preserves the Greek form, and English 'hard to understand' all acknowledge genuine comprehension challenges. Peter doesn't excuse confusion but warns that difficulty makes Scripture vulnerable to misinterpretation by those unwilling to do careful study—twisted teaching often exploits genuinely complex passages. 1×
