N-GFS  |  8× in 3 senses
Proof, tested character, or ordeal; the process of testing and the proven quality that results from enduring trial.
A richly layered noun that moves from the act of testing through to its outcome. In Romans 5:4, Paul traces a chain: tribulation produces endurance, and endurance produces dokime — a proven, battle-tested character. Elsewhere it denotes the concrete proof or evidence that validates a claim, as when Paul seeks 'proof of your obedience' (2 Cor 2:9). It can also name the trial itself, as in the Macedonian churches' 'great testing of affliction' (2 Cor 8:2). Spanish and French both render all three senses with a single word ('prueba,' 'epreuve'), showing how tightly the act of testing and the quality it produces are bound together.

Senses
1. proof, evidence Concrete demonstration or evidence that validates a claim — the tangible proof of something professed. Paul appeals to this sense when he writes of seeking 'proof of your obedience' (2 Cor 2:9) and 'proof of your ministry' (2 Cor 9:13). Spanish 'prueba' and German 'Pruefung' both carry this evidentiary nuance.

2. proven character, tested quality The quality of character that emerges through endurance of trials — proven, tested moral fiber. Romans 5:4 presents the famous progression where tribulation yields endurance and endurance yields dokime. In Philippians 2:22, Timothy's proven character is commended. The multilingual glosses show Spanish splitting to 'caracter-probado' here, distinguishing result from process.

3. testing, ordeal The process or experience of being tested, an ordeal or trial that puts faith to the proof. In 2 Corinthians 8:2, the Macedonian churches' 'great testing of affliction' overflowed in generosity. Hebrews 3:9 quotes Psalm 95 where Israel tested God in the wilderness. French 'epreuve' and Spanish 'prueba' encompass both this processual sense and the evidentiary one.
