διᾰπορ-έω G1280
diaporeo -- to be thoroughly perplexed, utterly at a loss, deeply puzzled
Diaporeo intensifies the simple aporeo ('to be at a loss') with the prefix dia- ('thoroughly'), conveying a state of deep perplexity or bewilderment. All four New Testament uses describe people confronted with events that defy their categories: Herod is greatly perplexed by reports about Jesus (Luke 9:7), the Pentecost crowd is utterly amazed and baffled (Acts 2:12), the temple officers are at a total loss over the apostles' escape (Acts 5:24), and Peter is deeply puzzled by his vision (Acts 10:17). Spanish perplejo and French perplexe both capture this thorough bafflement -- not casual doubt but genuine cognitive disorientation.
Senses
1. sense 1 — To be thoroughly perplexed or completely at a loss, expressing intense cognitive bewilderment when confronted with inexplicable events. The prefix dia- intensifies the confusion beyond ordinary uncertainty. Herod is deeply puzzled by conflicting reports about Jesus (Luke 9:7); the Pentecost crowd stands bewildered at hearing their own languages (Acts 2:12); temple officials cannot fathom the apostles' escape (Acts 5:24); and Peter is baffled by his rooftop vision (Acts 10:17). Spanish estaba-perplejo and French etre-perplexe both reflect this thorough, disorienting confusion. 4×
