διακρίνω G1252
To separate, distinguish, discern, or doubt — ranging from judicial evaluation and making distinctions to internal wavering and verbal disputation.
Built from dia- (through, apart) and krino (judge), this verb's range mirrors the act of pulling things apart to examine them. At its most constructive, it means to evaluate carefully — discerning the body of the Lord (1 Cor 11:29) or judging between believers (1 Cor 6:5). It can also mean to make distinctions between persons, as when God 'made no distinction' between Jew and Gentile (Acts 15:9). In the middle-passive, however, it turns inward: the doubter is literally 'divided within himself,' like the wave-tossed person of James 1:6. Spanish tracks these senses with 'dudar' (doubt), 'discernir' (discern), 'distinguir' (distinguish), and 'contender' (contend).
Senses
1. doubt or waver — To doubt, waver, or be divided within oneself — the internal fracture of a person who cannot settle on belief. Jesus tells the disciples that if they do not doubt (diakritho) they can move mountains (Matt 21:21; Mark 11:23), and Paul celebrates Abraham who did not waver (diekrithe) in unbelief (Rom 4:20). The Spirit tells Peter to go with the messengers 'doubting nothing' (Acts 10:20). Spanish 'dudar' and French 'douter' preserve this psychological self-division faithfully. 9×

2. discern or evaluate — To discern, evaluate, or judge carefully — applying critical assessment to determine the truth, quality, or appropriateness of something. Paul asks the Corinthians whether there is no one wise enough to 'decide' (diakrinai) between brothers (1 Cor 6:5), and urges them to 'discern' (diakrinontes) the body at the Lord's Supper (1 Cor 11:29). Spanish 'discernir/juzgar' and German 'unterscheiden' reflect the deliberative, analytical quality of this sense. 5×

3. distinguish or differentiate — To distinguish or differentiate between persons or categories — making a separation that recognizes real differences or, negatively, shows partiality. In Acts 15:9 God 'made no distinction' (diekrinen) between Jews and Gentiles by giving the Holy Spirit to both, while James 2:4 accuses those who show favoritism of having 'made distinctions' among themselves. Spanish 'distinguir' and the Greek prefix dia- both foreground the act of sorting apart. 3×

4. contend or dispute — To contend or dispute verbally with someone — the separation metaphor extended to adversarial confrontation. In Acts 11:2 the circumcision party 'contended' (diekrinonto) with Peter over his visit to Gentiles, and in Jude 9 the archangel Michael, 'when disputing' (diakrinomenos) with the devil about Moses' body, deferred to the Lord's rebuke. Spanish 'contender' and German 'streitend' capture the combative flavor. 2×
