Demosios is the adjective form of demos ('people'), meaning 'public' or 'belonging to the civic sphere,' as opposed to private (idios). In the New Testament all four occurrences function adverbially in the dative feminine (demosia), meaning 'publicly, in the open.' The apostles are placed in the public prison (Acts 5:18), Paul protests being beaten publicly without trial (Acts 16:37), Apollos refutes opponents publicly (Acts 18:28), and Paul teaches publicly as well as house to house (Acts 20:20). Spanish publica/publicamente, French public, and German offentlich all align on this sense of open, civic visibility.
