V-ASA-2P  |  4× in 1 sense
to lend (money); (middle) to borrow
Daneizo in the active voice means to lend, and in the middle voice to borrow. Jesus uses this word in the Sermon on the Mount and the Sermon on the Plain to challenge transactional generosity. In Matthew 5:42, he commands giving to the one who asks and not turning away the would-be borrower. In Luke 6:34-35, he pushes further: even sinners lend to sinners expecting equal return, but disciples should lend expecting nothing back. The word sits at the intersection of economics and ethics, redefining generosity.

Senses
1. sense 1 To lend money or goods to someone, or (in the middle voice) to borrow. Jesus invokes this financial term to redefine generosity: do not refuse the one who wants to borrow (Matt 5:42), and lend expecting nothing in return, unlike sinners who lend only for reciprocal gain (Luke 6:34-35). Spanish 'prestar/pedir prestado,' French 'prêter,' and the German forms all preserve the dual active-middle distinction between lending and borrowing.
