V-PPA-VMP  |  2× in 1 sense
to laugh, to express joy or amusement through laughter
This verb means to laugh, expressing joy, amusement, or sometimes scorn through laughter. Classical Greek used it across a range from genuine mirth to mocking derision. In the New Testament, Jesus uses it in two parallel beatitudes and woes in Luke's Sermon on the Plain. He pronounces blessing on those who weep now, promising 'you shall laugh' (Luke 6:21), and pronounces woe on those who laugh now, warning 'you shall mourn and weep' (Luke 6:25). The stark contrast creates a reversal theme: present sorrow will turn to joy, present laughter to mourning. Both uses are future indicative, promising certain coming reversals.

Senses
1. sense 1 Luke 6:21 concludes a beatitude: 'Blessed are you who weep now, for you shall laugh' (future middle indicative γελάσετε), promising that present grief will transform into joy. Luke 6:25 begins a woe: 'Woe to you who laugh now, for you shall mourn and weep,' warning that present joy will reverse into sorrow. Spanish 'reiréis/que ríen', French 'rire', and German 'γελάσετε/γελῶντες' capture both the future verb and present participle. The two passages form a deliberate antithesis in Jesus's teaching about eschatological reversal: those who weep in solidarity with the suffering will find joy in God's kingdom, while those who laugh carelessly now will face judgment's grief.
