ἄστοργ-ος G0794
without natural affection, lacking family love
An adjective describing people devoid of natural family affection. Paul lists it among the vices characterizing godlessness in the last days (Romans 1:31; 2 Timothy 3:3). The term negates 'storge,' the Greek word for family affection and parental love. It describes the chilling absence of instinctive bonds that normally tie families together - parents who don't love children, children who don't care for parents. Classical usage applied it to cruel or heartless behavior.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Both Pauline vice catalogs include this term among society's moral breakdowns. Romans 1:31 places it in a list of characteristics of those who suppress truth about God. 2 Timothy 3:3 warns Timothy about people in 'last days' exhibiting this heartlessness. The absence of natural affection represents profound moral degradation - the dissolution of foundational human bonds. German 'lieblos' (loveless) and French 'sans-affection' (without affection) capture the privative sense. 2×
