N-AFS  |  3× in 1 sense
greed, plundering, extortion; seizing what belongs to others
This noun denotes robbery, plundering, or the greed that drives such seizure. Jesus condemns the scribes and Pharisees for cleaning the outside of the cup while inside it is full of 'greed and self-indulgence' (Matt 23:25; Luke 11:39). Hebrews 10:34 commends believers for joyfully accepting 'the plundering' of their property, knowing they have better possessions. The word encompasses both the act of seizing and the disposition of greed. The classical meaning of violent seizure informs the NT usage of rapacious taking.

Senses
1. sense 1 Denotes both the act of plundering and the greedy spirit behind it. Matthew 23:25 and Luke 11:39 condemn religious leaders for inner 'greed' (ἁρπαγῆς) despite outward cleanliness. Hebrews 10:34 celebrates believers' joy amid 'the plundering' (ἁρπαγὴν) of their possessions, pointing to eternal inheritance. The Spanish terms ('rapiña,' 'robo,' 'despojo'), French 'rapine,' and German 'Raub' all emphasize violent or greedy taking of what belongs to another, whether literal property or metaphorical moral seizure.
