The adjective arestos ('pleasing, acceptable') describes actions or persons that meet with approval or give satisfaction. In classical Greek it ranged from 'sufficient' (of a quantity of wine) to 'acceptable' (of a person in someone's estimation). Its four New Testament uses span theological and political contexts: Jesus declares he always does what is 'pleasing' to the Father (John 8:29); the apostles judge it 'not fitting/pleasing' to neglect the word of God (Acts 6:2); Herod saw that persecuting Christians was 'pleasing' to the Jews (Acts 12:3); and believers are to do what is 'pleasing' before God (1 John 3:22). Spanish agradable and French agreable both derive from the same Latin root as English 'agreeable,' capturing the core idea of meeting with favor.
