ἀποτιν-άσσω G0660
to shake off, shake away from oneself
A vivid gesture-verb describing the act of shaking something off one's body. Jesus instructs his disciples to shake dust off their feet as a testimony against towns that reject them (Luke 9:5). Paul shakes a viper off his hand into the fire on Malta (Acts 28:5). The middle voice emphasizes personal action - shaking off from oneself. Classical authors used it for getting rid of burdens or unwanted things, including metaphorical ones.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Both New Testament instances involve symbolic or dramatic physical gestures: shaking off dust as prophetic testimony of rejection (Luke 9:5) and shaking off a deadly snake (Acts 28:5). The multilingual glosses uniformly preserve the physical action of shaking/shuddering off. Interestingly, the term appears in the Attitudes/Emotions domain despite its physical nature, perhaps because dust-shaking carries emotional freight as a gesture of disassociation and judgment. 2×
