ἀπόκρῠφος G0614
hidden, secret, concealed; not visible or known
This adjective describes what is hidden or kept secret. Jesus teaches that nothing is 'hidden' except to be revealed, nor secret except to come to light (Mark 4:22; Luke 8:17). Paul speaks of Christ, in whom are 'hidden' all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge (Col 2:3). The word can denote physical concealment or the deeper hiddenness of divine mysteries now being unveiled. The tension between present hiddenness and future revelation is central to its NT usage.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Describes what is presently concealed but destined for revelation. Mark 4:22 and Luke 8:17 use identical phrasing: nothing is 'hidden' (ἀπόκρυφον) except to be manifested. Colossians 2:3 speaks of hidden treasures: in Christ 'are hidden' (ἀπόκρυφοι) all wisdom's and knowledge's treasures. The paradox of concealment serving ultimate disclosure appears across these texts. The French 'caché' and Spanish 'escondido' convey the state of being out of sight, whether temporarily or awaiting divine unveiling. 3×
