This middle voice verb signifies laying hold of something or someone to assist them. Mary's Magnificat celebrates how God 'helped' Israel his servant, remembering his mercy (Luke 1:54). Paul quotes Jesus's teaching that supporting the weak is more blessed than receiving (Acts 20:35). In 1 Timothy 6:2, Christian slaves are to serve well those masters who are 'partaking of' or 'receiving' their good service as believers. The classical sense of 'laying hold of' develops into the idea of grasping someone in order to help them.
