To repay, recompense, give back in return; passive: to be repaid or recompensed
A compound verb (anti + apo + didomi — 'give back in return against') expressing full requital or recompense. Paul quotes Deuteronomy 32:35 in Romans 12:19: 'Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord,' using this word for God's definitive settling of accounts. Yet the same verb carries grace: in Luke 14:14 Jesus promises that generosity to the poor will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous. Paul also uses it in the tender question of Romans 11:35 — who has first given to God so as to be repaid? The word thus spans divine judgment and divine generosity.

Senses
1. repay, recompense The active sense of repaying, recompensing, or giving back in return — whether for good or for evil. Romans 12:19 and Hebrews 10:30 both cite God as the one who will repay vengeance. In 2 Thessalonians 1:6 God repays tribulation to those who afflict believers. Yet in 1 Thessalonians 3:9 Paul asks what thanksgiving he can 'render back' to God — using the same word for grateful requital. Spanish 'retribuir' and French 'rendre en retour' capture the reciprocal nature of this recompense.

2. be repaid, be recompensed The passive sense: to be repaid or to receive recompense. In Luke 14:14 Jesus assures that the one who invites the poor, crippled, and blind — those who cannot repay — 'will be repaid' (antapodothesetai) at the resurrection. Romans 11:35 poses the rhetorical question of whether anyone has given to God first 'so as to be repaid.' Spanish 'le sera recompensado' and German 'vergelten' both express this promise of future divine reciprocation.
