to sit up, to rise to a sitting position from lying down
This verb means to sit up or rise to a sitting position. Both occurrences describe resurrections. In Luke 7:15, when Jesus touches the bier and commands the widow's dead son to arise, ὁ νεκρὸς ἀνεκάθισεν—the dead man sat up—and began to speak. Acts 9:40 records that after Peter prayed over dead Tabitha and commanded her to arise, ἀνεκάθισεν—she sat up. The verb captures the dramatic moment when death's horizontal stillness gives way to living vertical posture. Sitting up becomes the first visible sign that life has returned, preceding speech and full restoration.
Senses
1. sense 1 — The sitting-up action appears uniformly: Spanish 'se sentó,' French 's'asseoir' (to sit) and 'se relever' (sit up), German preserving the Greek. Both resurrection narratives use the same verb for the same pivotal moment—the transition from death's stillness to life's movement. The action is both literal and deeply symbolic, manifesting the restoration of life through Jesus' and his apostle's word. 2×
