V-ASP-1P  |  5× in 1 sense
To be ashamed, put to shame; to feel disgrace or be humiliated, often in relation to faith or conduct.
Carries the force of being ashamed or put to shame, whether by one's own failures or by the judgment of others. The dishonest steward admits he would be 'ashamed to beg' (Luke 16:3). Paul insists he will not be put to shame in his bold proclamation (2 Cor 10:8; Phil 1:20). Peter urges believers who suffer as Christians not to be ashamed (1 Pet 4:16), and John exhorts confidence so that 'we may not be ashamed before him at his coming' (1 John 2:28). Spanish 'avergonzarse' and French 'avoir honte' both capture the deeply personal, moral dimension of this shame.

Senses
1. sense 1 To feel shame, be disgraced, or be put to shame — encompassing both the internal emotion and the public experience of humiliation. In its middle/passive forms (αἰσχύνομαι), the word denotes the believer's relationship to honor and disgrace before God and others. Luke 16:3 uses it for social embarrassment, while the epistles focus on eschatological confidence: not being ashamed at Christ's appearing (1 John 2:28) or in bold proclamation (Phil 1:20). Spanish 'avergonzarse' and French 'avoir honte' emphasize the reflexive, deeply felt nature of the shame, distinguishing it from mere external rebuke.
