Aischyne encompasses both the painful emotion of being shamed and the objective condition of disgrace. Jesus endured the cross 'despising its shame' (Heb 12:2), while Paul renounced 'the hidden things of shame' in his ministry (2 Cor 4:2). Philippians 3:19 warns of those whose 'glory is in their shame,' and Jude 1:13 likens false teachers to wild waves 'casting up the foam of their own shame.' The word's range spans inner mortification (Luke 14:9, taking the lowest place in humiliation) to public dishonor.
