In classical Greek αἰσχρός ranges from physical ugliness to moral baseness, always opposed to καλός ('noble, beautiful'). The NT restricts it to the moral-social sphere: Paul declares it shameful for a woman to have her hair shorn (1 Cor 11:6), shameful for women to speak in assembly (1 Cor 14:35), and says deeds of darkness are too shameful even to mention (Eph 5:12). In Titus 1:11 false teachers pursue 'shameful gain.' The Spanish 'vergonzoso' and German 'schändlich' capture the strong moral censure, while French 'honteux' highlights the shame dimension.
