V-PMA-2P  |  8× in 1 sense
To praise, laud, or give vocal thanks to God in worship; to celebrate God's deeds with words of acclaim.
A verb of joyful, vocal worship directed exclusively toward God in the New Testament. The heavenly host 'praises God' at Christ's birth (Luke 2:13), and the shepherds go away 'praising God' for what they have seen (Luke 2:20). When Jesus approaches Jerusalem, the whole crowd of disciples begins 'praising God with a loud voice for all the mighty works they had seen' (Luke 19:37). In the early church, believers continue 'praising God' as a hallmark of their common life (Acts 2:47). Spanish 'alabar' and German 'loben' both convey this dedicated, God-directed vocal celebration.

Senses
1. praise (God) To praise God — to give vocal, joyful expression of worship and thanksgiving directed toward God for his mighty acts. The angelic host praises God at the nativity (Luke 2:13); the shepherds return praising God (Luke 2:20); the crowd of disciples praises God at Jesus' triumphal approach (Luke 19:37); the healed man praises God in the temple (Acts 3:8-9); and the early church praises God daily (Acts 2:47). The multilingual unanimity (Spanish 'alabar,' French 'louer,' German 'loben') confirms a single, focused sense: God-directed vocal worship, with no secular or ironic usage in the NT.
