The adjective agapetos ('beloved') derives from the verb agapao and conveys deep, cherished love. Its 61 New Testament occurrences divide across two primary contexts. First, it is the divine designation for Jesus at his baptism and transfiguration: 'This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased' (Matt 3:17; 17:5; Mark 1:11; 9:7). In the parable of the wicked tenants, the owner sends 'his beloved son' as a final emissary (Mark 12:6; Luke 20:13). Second, Paul and other epistle writers use it as an affectionate address for fellow believers: 'beloved brethren' (1 Cor 15:58; Phil 4:1). Spanish amado, French bien-aime, and German geliebt capture both the Christological and fraternal senses.
