ἀγαλλι-άω G0021
Rejoice greatly, exult — to leap or throb with overwhelming gladness, especially in God's saving acts
The verb ἀγαλλιάω (agalliaō) expresses a joy so intense it borders on the physical — an exultation that can scarcely be contained. Mary's soul 'rejoices greatly' in God her Savior (Luke 1:47), Jesus himself 'exulted in the Holy Spirit' (Luke 10:21), and Abraham 'rejoiced' to see Christ's day (John 8:56). The Beatitudes promise this exultation as the reward for enduring persecution (Matt 5:12). Peter uses it of believers who, though not yet seeing Christ, 'rejoice with joy inexpressible' (1 Pet 1:8). Spanish 'regocijarse' and French 'tressaillir de joie' both reach for this register of overflowing delight.
Senses
1. to rejoice greatly, exult — To exult, rejoice greatly, or leap with gladness — a joy rooted in God's redemptive activity rather than mere circumstance. Used of Mary's Magnificat response (Luke 1:47), Jesus' Spirit-filled thanksgiving (Luke 10:21), Abraham's forward-looking joy in Christ (John 8:56), and the disciples' temporary delight in John the Baptist (John 5:35). The Beatitudes command this exultation under persecution (Matt 5:12). Spanish 'regocijarse' and German 'frohlocken' both convey the ecstatic, God-directed quality of this gladness. 11×
