N-fs  |  5× in 1 sense
slumber, drowsiness; light sleep associated with visions or with laziness
Tenuma describes a state of light sleep or drowsiness, distinct from deep sleep (tardemah) though sometimes paired with it. In Job 33:15, slumberings upon the bed become the occasion for God to speak through visions and dreams. In Proverbs, the word takes a sharply negative turn: 'a little sleep, a little slumber' leads to poverty creeping in like a robber (6:10; 24:33). Psalm 132:4 records David's vow not to give slumber to his eyelids until he finds a dwelling for the ark — an image of urgent, sleepless devotion.

Senses
1. sense 1 Slumber or drowsiness as the setting for divine revelation. Job 33:15 describes God opening human ears 'in slumberings upon the bed,' parallel to deep sleep (תַּרְדֵּמָה). French 'sommeil' and Spanish 'dormitar' render the drowsy state. The singular or plural form does not change the sense; it denotes the liminal state between waking and deep sleep in which visions occur.
