Tema — an Arabian territory and its people, descended from Ishmael
Tema refers to an oasis settlement in northwestern Arabia, identified with modern Teyma, and to the tribe descended from Ishmael's son of the same name (Gen 25:15). Isaiah 21:14 calls on the inhabitants of Tema to bring water to the thirsty, reflecting its role as a caravan waypoint. Jeremiah 25:23 groups Tema with Dedan and Buz among Arabian peoples under divine judgment. Job 6:19 invokes the caravans of Tema as a metaphor for disappointed hope, since desert travelers depend on seasonal wadis that may run dry.
Senses
1. sense 1 — A proper noun designating both the Arabian territory centered on the oasis of Teyma in the Hejaz and the Ishmaelite clan associated with it. The name appears in genealogy (Gen 25:15; 1 Chr 1:30), prophetic oracles against Arabian peoples (Isa 21:14; Jer 25:23), and wisdom poetry describing trade caravans (Job 6:19). Translations uniformly transliterate the name — English, Spanish, and French all render 'Tema' or 'Teima' — confirming its consistent identification as a geographical and ethnic designation. 5×
