To plunder, despoil; to strip and carry off possessions by force
A byform of שָׁסָה, this verb describes violent plundering — the forcible seizure and carrying away of goods and persons. In Judges 2:14, God hands Israel over to raiders who plunder them, and in 1 Samuel 17:53 the Israelites plunder the Philistine camp after Goliath's defeat. The Niphal passive appears in Zechariah 14:2 and Isaiah 13:16, where houses are rifled in the chaos of conquest. Psalm 89:41 uses it of the humiliated king whom all passersby despoil. Spanish 'saquear' and French 'piller' both capture the violent dispossession at the heart of this verb.
Senses
1. sense 1 — To plunder, despoil, or strip by force — used of both active raiding and passive victimization. The Qal active describes enemies plundering Israel (Judg 2:14; Ps 89:41) and Israel plundering the Philistines (1 Sam 17:53). The Niphal passive pictures houses being rifled during siege (Isa 13:16; Zech 14:2). Spanish 'saquearon' and French 'pillèrent' accurately convey the violent seizure of property. The participial form in Jeremiah 30:16 extends to personified plunderers facing divine retribution. 5×
