to be quiet, at ease, prosperous; describing both genuine peace and the deceptive security of the wicked
A verb meaning to be at ease, tranquil, or prosperous. It carries a striking moral ambiguity: the same root describes the longed-for peace of the righteous and the unsettling prosperity of the wicked. Job uses it in both senses — he had no ease even before calamity struck (3:26), yet the tents of robbers are at ease (12:6). Jeremiah asks the classic theodicy question: why do the wicked prosper (12:1)? Lamentations 1:5 notes that Jerusalem's enemies prosper. The psalmist's prayer for Jerusalem's peace (Ps 122:6) offers the redemptive counterpoint.
Senses
1. sense 1 — To be at ease, tranquil, prosperous — describing a state of undisturbed comfort, applied both to the legitimate peace of the faithful (Ps 122:6, 'May those who love you be at ease') and to the troubling prosperity of the wicked (Jer 12:1; Job 12:6; Lam 1:5). Spanish 'prósperas están' and 'prosperan' capture the material overtone, while English 'at ease' emphasizes the psychological calm. Job 3:26 uses the first person ('I was not at ease') to express the absence of this rest, forming a painful inclusio with the wicked who enjoy it effortlessly. 5×
