To spread out, spread abroad; stretching something flat over an open area, used literally of drying and figuratively of divine expansion.
A verb meaning to spread out or stretch something flat across an open surface. Its most vivid use is in Numbers 11:32, where the Israelites spread out quail around the camp to dry them — the Vulgate's 'siccaverunt' confirms the drying purpose. In 2 Samuel 17:19 the woman of Bahurim spreads grain over a well to conceal Jonathan and Ahimaaz. The Piel intensification appears in Psalm 88:9 of spreading out hands in prayer. Job 12:23 offers a striking figurative extension: God 'spreads out' the nations, expanding their territory before bringing them low.
Senses
1. spread out, spread abroad — To spread out flat, stretch abroad over an open area. The Spanish 'esparcirán' (scatter) and 'extiende' (extend) capture the two poles of the verb's range: dispersing objects across space (Num 11:32, spreading quail to dry; Jer 8:2, bones spread before sun and moon) and extending or stretching something (2 Sam 17:19, covering spread over a well; Job 12:23, God expanding nations). The Piel form in Psalm 88:9 adds intensity to the gesture of spreading out hands in desperate prayer. 6×
