A solemn rest or sabbatism, divinely appointed complete cessation from labor on sacred occasions
An intensified form related to 'Sabbath,' denoting not merely a day off but a complete, sacred rest appointed by God. It first appears when Israel is told the seventh day shall be a shabbaton of holy rest to the LORD (Exod 16:23), even before Sinai's formal legislation. The word is applied to the weekly Sabbath (Exod 31:15; 35:2), the Day of Atonement (Lev 16:31; 23:32), the first and seventh days of Tabernacles (Lev 23:39), and the sabbatical year when the land itself rests (Lev 25:4–5).
