radam -- to fall into a deep, heavy sleep; be stunned into unconsciousness or stupor
A Nifal verb describing the onset or state of a deep, overpowering sleep that borders on unconsciousness. When Sisera fell into exhausted slumber, Jael drove a tent peg through his temple (Judg 4:21); when Jonah descended into the ship's hold, he fell so deeply asleep that the captain had to shake him awake during a storm (Jon 1:5-6). In Daniel's visions the word describes a divinely induced stupor -- falling face-down to the ground, overwhelmed by awe and dread (Dan 8:18; 10:9). Proverbs uses the participle to characterize the sluggard who sleeps through harvest (Prov 10:5), and the Psalmist employs it for the sleep of death (Ps 76:7). Spanish sueño profundo, French dormir profondément, and German in tiefen Schlaf fallen all capture its intensity beyond ordinary rest.
Senses
1. to fall into deep sleep, be in a stupor — To fall into or be in a deep, heavy sleep approaching unconsciousness or stupor, whether from exhaustion (Judg 4:21; Jon 1:5), divine overwhelming (Dan 8:18; 10:9), or figurative death-sleep (Ps 76:7). The Arabic cognate radama ('to stop up, block') may suggest being 'sealed off' from waking awareness. Cross-lingual renderings consistently emphasize depth and involuntariness: Spanish caer en sueño profundo, French tomber dans un profond sommeil. Proverbs 10:5 uses the participle as a substantive for the shamefully somnolent, the one who sleeps when he should be gathering. 7×
