V-Qal-Imperf-3fp  |  4× in 1 sense
be blunt, dull (of metal); be set on edge (of teeth)
A verb with two applications: metal becoming dull or blunt, and teeth being 'set on edge' (the unpleasant tingling sensation from eating sour food). Ecclesiastes 10:10 uses it of a blunt iron tool that requires more effort. Jeremiah 31:29-30 and Ezekiel 18:2 cite the proverb 'the fathers have eaten sour grapes and the children's teeth are set on edge'—which both prophets explicitly reject, teaching individual rather than generational responsibility for sin.

Senses
1. sense 1 Ecclesiastes 10:10 warns that 'if the iron is blunt (קֵהָה) and one does not sharpen it, he must use more strength.' Jeremiah 31:29 and 31:30 quote (then refute) the proverb about fathers eating sour grapes and children's teeth being 'set on edge' (תִּקְהֶינָה). Ezekiel 18:2 quotes the same proverb before refuting it. Spanish embotarse (become dull) and dentera (teeth set on edge) capture both the literal (dull blade) and figurative (unpleasant sensation) uses.
