Adj-ms  |  6× in 1 sense
A violent one, robber, or ruthless oppressor; used of lawless persons and ravenous beasts
Describes a person or creature characterized by violence, lawlessness, and predatory aggression. In Psalm 17:4 David avoids the paths of the parits, the violent; in Jeremiah 7:11 the Temple has become a den of robbers; Ezekiel uses the term for those who profane sacred space (7:22) and for a blood-shedding son (18:10). Daniel 11:14 speaks of violent men among the people who rise up to fulfill a vision. Isaiah 35:9 extends the image to a ravenous beast. The word consistently evokes ruthless, forceful transgression.

Senses
1. violent one, robber A violent, lawless person or predatory creature who uses force to rob, oppress, or destroy. Used of human aggressors in Ps 17:4 (violent men), Jer 7:11 (robbers desecrating the Temple), Ezek 7:22 (profaners), Ezek 18:10 (a blood-shedding oppressor), and Dan 11:14 (violent rebels). Isaiah 35:9 applies it to a ravenous beast. Spanish violento and ladrones ('thieves') capture the dual aspect of brute force and criminal lawlessness. The term always implies aggressive, predatory behavior that violates social or divine order.
