V-Qal-Perf-3ms  |  4× in 1 sense
to pass over, skip over; to spring over and spare, particularly in the Passover event
The verb giving the Passover its name—to pass over or skip over, sparing those beneath the marked doorposts. Exodus 12 records God's promise three times: 'I will pass over you' (12:13), 'the Lord will pass over the door' (12:23), and explains that 'the Lord passed over the houses' of Israel while striking Egypt (12:27). Isaiah extends the imagery: God will 'pass over' and protect Jerusalem like birds hovering over their young (31:5). The verb captures divine discrimination—selectively sparing the covenant people while executing judgment on Egypt. This 'passing over' became the central salvation event memorialized annually, giving its name to Israel's defining festival.

Senses
1. sense 1 To pass over and spare, especially in the Passover deliverance. Exodus 12:13, 23, 27 narrate God's promise and fulfillment: passing over Israelite houses marked with blood while striking Egyptian firstborn. Isaiah 31:5 applies the imagery to Jerusalem's protection. All four uses describe divine selective sparing—God 'passing over' to protect His people while judging their oppressors, the foundational Passover act.
