Wonder, marvel; something extraordinary and awe-inspiring, especially God's miraculous acts.
The noun pele denotes something extraordinary that surpasses human understanding — a wonder or marvel, nearly always attributed to God. At the Red Sea, Moses sang of YHWH 'doing wonders' (Exod 15:11). The psalmists meditate on God's pele in both creation and redemption (Ps 77:11, 14; 78:12; 88:10; 89:5). In Isaiah 9:5 (English 9:6), the messianic child receives the throne name 'Wonderful Counselor' (pele yo'etz), where the wonder-quality belongs to the royal figure himself. Lamentations 1:9 uses the plural adverbially — Jerusalem 'came down wonderfully' — expressing the shocking, almost incomprehensible nature of her fall. Spanish 'Maravilloso' preserves the sense of awe.
Senses
1. wonder, marvel — Something extraordinary and beyond ordinary comprehension — a wonder, marvel, or miracle — used overwhelmingly of God's acts and attributes. Applied to YHWH's redemptive deeds at the Exodus (Exod 15:11 'doing wonders'), to his mighty works recalled in worship (Ps 77:11, 14; 78:12), and to the incomprehensibility of his faithfulness (Ps 88:10; 89:5). Isaiah 9:5 applies the term to the messianic king as 'Wonderful Counselor.' The testimonies of God's law are themselves 'wonders' (Ps 119:129). In Lamentations 1:9 the plural functions adverbially to describe Jerusalem's astonishing, incomprehensible descent into ruin. 13×
