V-Qal-QalPassPrtcpl-mp  |  5× in 1 sense
to separate, set free, release, dismiss; also to escape or slip away
A verb whose core meaning of separation branches into several vivid applications. David 'slipped away' from Saul's spear (1 Sam 19:10), certain Levites were 'set free' from other duties to devote themselves to music (1 Chr 9:33), and Jehoiada did not 'dismiss' the outgoing priestly divisions during the coup against Athaliah (2 Chr 23:8). In Prov 17:14, whoever 'lets loose' a quarrel is like breaching a dam. The enigmatic Ps 22:7 uses the passive participle in a context of scorn and rejection. Spanish ranges from 'libres' (free) to 'suelta' (release), while French 'glissa au loin' captures the escape sense.

Senses
1. sense 1 To slip away or escape — intransitive separation from danger or a pursuer. In 1 Sam 19:10, David dodges Saul's spear and 'slipped away,' evading death. French 'il glissa au loin' (he slipped far away) vividly captures the motion of narrow escape.
