burden-bearer, laborer who carries heavy loads for construction or transport
A late Hebrew noun designating one who carries heavy burdens, used collectively for laborers conscripted for building projects. Solomon employed tens of thousands of these workers alongside stonecutters for the Temple (1 Kgs 5:15; 2 Chr 2:2, 18), and Josiah similarly organized them for Temple repairs (2 Chr 34:13). In Nehemiah 4:10, the burden-bearers' flagging strength becomes a metaphor for the people's discouragement during wall reconstruction. The English 'burden-bearers' and Spanish 'cargadores' both capture the collective labor force sense.

Senses
1. sense 1 Burden-bearer or carrier employed in large-scale construction, used collectively for conscripted labor gangs. Solomon's Temple workforce included 70,000 of these alongside 80,000 stonecutters (2 Chr 2:2). The English 'burden-bearers,' Spanish 'los-cargadores,' and French 'porteur' all converge on the notion of heavy manual labor. In Nehemiah 4:10, their weakening strength signals the demoralization of the rebuilding effort.
